I hate when people tell me, “Don’t be shy.” It’s the kind of advice that falls flat even when it’s offered with the best intentions, because well, it's just not that easy. Being shy in such a hectic world can be tough, but there are times when it can be especially stressful. Getting fitted for a bra is one of those times. So, in honor of all the shy people out there, the BOB team decided to share some advice that may help alleviate your worries. Next time you gear up to get fitted for that perfect bra, take a few minutes to brush up on these 7 easy tips.

1. Don’t overthink it.

A lot of people have the misconception that your fitter has to see your boobs to size you. If that’s a fear of yours, good news—you don’t have to get naked to get sized. Your fitter will need to see you in a bra, of course, but will happily turn around or leave the room completely while you change. And if you’re totally adamant about leaving your shirt on, you can do that too—just be aware you won’t get the best fit this way.

    2. Make it an occasion.

If you’re a naturally shy or anxious person, you’ll want to start out on a high note. Get fitted on a day you’re feeling good about yourself. Put on a shirt you really like, preferably one that’s easy to get out of. Eat a good breakfast and drink plenty of water. Do all of those self-help things people post about on Facebook until you feel especially “on it.” Beef up your confidence as much as you can before you head in for your fitting.
      3. Have an idea of what you want.

One of the best ways to breeze through the sizing process is to know what you’re looking for going into it. Are you searching for something low-cut or something with full coverage? What kind of tops are you planning to wear with your new bra? Do you want something stretchy and comfortable or something more supportive and controlling? Before you head in for your fitting, put together a few bullet points like these so you can better communicate with your fitter.

      4.Bring a buddy.

If you’re not quite comfortable getting sized, bring along someone you trust. Your fitter won’t mind, and as an added bonus, you’ll have a second honest opinion on which styles look good and which ones aren’t exactly flattering. That’s what friends are for, right?

      5. Build a rapport with your fitter.

It can be weird to let a total stranger see you semi-naked. It’s slightly less weird the second time, and by the third time, it’s old news. Find one or two fitters you like and stick with them. Odds are they’ll remember you too, and over time, they’ll learn which styles you like and which ones don’t work for you. This tip may not work so well if you shop at a large department store with a ton of employees, but if you frequent a specialty store (like Breakout Bras, for example), you’ll have a more personal experience and an easier time building a working relationship with your fitter.

      6. Be honest.

Sizing is a pretty intimate business, and part of a fitter’s job is to make sure you’re comfortable with the process. Have a question? Don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t like the way something fits? Say so. The worst thing you can do during is nod and agree when you really want to say, “Holy crap, this is the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever worn.” It’s best to think of your fitting as a team effort, not just a service someone is providing for you. There needs to be some give and take in order to find something that works, and the more you talk to your fitter, the more successful your fitting will be.

      7. Remember, we’ve seen it all.

Your fitter has probably seen thousands of boobs, bellies, and backs, so there’s absolutely no need for you to be embarrassed about your body. In our line of work, there’s no room for judgment. We’re just here to help you find what works best for you, and hopefully make you feel better about your body in the process.
